Appearance of styrene s bands at 1627 cm-i, 1599 cm-i, and the C=C aromatic ring stretching 1945-1686 cm-i is an indication that the catalyst has been exposed to all of reactants. The reaction was carried out in a batch mode with a temperature ramping of 2 K/min from 298 K to 453 K. The formation of 2- and 3-phenylpropanal, as indicated by the C=0 stretching vibration at 1717 cm-i, were observed at 353 K. The intensity of this band increased with temperature.

The remaining question is what are the substituents. The bands in the 2980-2870 cm region are indicative of sp C—H stretches, and it is possible, based on the complexity of this region, that both —CH3 and CH2 groups are present. The 1450 cm band is overlapped by the aromatic ring stretch but is broader than might be expected if only the aromatic stretch is contributing. It may be assumed that some contribution to the band comes from an aliphatic C H bend, either CH3...
