Argon enrichment

Spectra for a series of Cu-Ni alloys have been obtained (91) and these are reproduced in Fig. 11. Because of overlapping of peaks from the component metals, separate indications of each element are only obtained from the 925 eV Cu peak and the 718 eV Ni peak. The results have only qualitative significance because the quoted nickel concentrations are bulk values. Nevertheless, they do suggest that for these particular samples of Cu-Ni alloys, the surface composition varies smoothly from pure copper to pure nickel. Auger spectroscopy has subsequently shown that the surface composition of the (110) face of a 55% Cu-Ni crystal was identical with the bulk composition (95a). Ono et al. Practicable isotopic enrichment has the following prerequisites adequately short time for the enrichment process, acceptable asymptotic enrichment factor, and adequate accuracy for the estimation of the enrichment factor. (When total activity, rather than specific activity, is limiting, one must also pay attention to losses during enrichment.) For the argon and carbon enrichments referred to above, enrichment factors of about 100 and 500 were obtained within a week and a few hours, respectively and enrichment factors were deduced from direct observations of adjacent, stable isotopes. The 14C enrichment process provided extra dividends for AMS measurement the sample was implanted in an ideal form for the accelerator ion source, and it was spatially localized (depth) which gave added signal-to-noise enhancement. 

Ironically, our current plans call for the reverse linkage of the above enrichment procedures. That is, we shall use an electromagnetic isotope separator to enrich argon isotopes for a mass spectrometry experiment, and we shall enrich radiocarbon via thermal diffusion for improved mini-gas proportional counting. 

A series of investigations was performed on the structure of the complexes formed by unsaturated hydrocarbons with lithium dissolved in a solid argon matrix. The structures proposed for these complexes are based on assignment of the perturbations observed in the IR spectra of the free hydrocarbons and their isotopically enriched species. 

This flow is enriched in less tightly adsorbed components in the case of air separation, the product consists typically of 90 to 95 percent oxygen, with the balance argon and a small amount of nitrogen. Conversely the exhaust stream is somewhat depleted in oxygen and argon. 

Ozone was flash photolyzed in the presence of 180 enriched water and added argon (03 H20 Ar =1 1 8). Vibrationally excited OH was observed56.
