The alkaloids argemonine (54a), isonorargemonine (54b), (—)-2,9-dimethoxy-3-hydroxypavinane (54c) (30), munitagine (55a), nd platy-cerine (55b) were isolated from A. munita ssp. rotundata and A. gracilenta (20) (Scheme 20). The pavine alkaloids were also found in the plants in the form of their methohydroxides (34) and N-oxides (20). On the basis of the alkaloids found in different Argemone species, Stermitz and McMurtrey postulated the theory of the chemotaxonomy and the biogenesis as outlined in Scheme 20 (20). The biosynthesis of pavine alkaloids has also been discussed on p. 439. [Pg.433]
