Spiral Archimedes

This diagram may also be used to illustrate the Newlands-Mendel6eff law of octaves, by arranging the elements along the curve in the order of their atomic weights. E. Loew (Zeit. phys. Chem.y 23, 1, 1897) represents the atomic weight, W, as a function of the radius vector, r, and the vectorial angle, 6 W = f(r, 6), so that r = 6 = JW. He thus obtains W = rO. This curve is the well-known Archimedes spiral. If r is any radius vector, the distances of the points P3,... from 0 are... 

Examples.—(1) Plot Archimedes spiral, r = ad and show that the re-l volutions of the spiral are at a distance of 2oir from one another.

Figure 2.27 illustrates the Emmi mold which is used for testing the very soft flow encapsulation compounds. It contains a rimner system cut in an Archimedes spiral starting from the center of the mold. The runner configuration is Vg-in half-round 100 in in length. The mold is heated to 300° F and run 300 Ib/in. The runner is marked in linear inches and the test results are recorded as a flow of jc in.
