Apatite in intermediate to felsic systems

SURVEY OF APATITE PROVENANCE Apatite in intermediate to felsic systems [Pg.281]

Upon recognition of carbon in apatite, there was skepticism about whether carbon was a constituent of apatite, or occurred as fine inclusions within the apatite. It has been demonstrated, primarily through the use of XRD, that the C in apatite is an integral component of the apatite structure and produces distinct XRD patterns (see discussion in Elliott 1994). Attempts have been made to calculate the carbon content of apatite. This has been done by assuming an ideal stoichiometry in the phosphorus site (P + Si + S + C = 6) (Sommerauer and Katz-Lehnert 1985). Although this is difficult because of coupled substitutions among sites, it has been found to be consistent with measurements by coulometric titration in some cases (Sommerauer and Katz-Lehnert 1985). [Pg.283]
