Antoine coefficients

For the monomers in the polymerization under consideration the fugacity coefficients were estimated by Redlich-Kwong equation of state and were found to be close to unity. The activity coefficients (8) for the monomers were estimated by Scatchard-Hildebrand s method (5) for the most volatile monomer there was a temperature dependence but none for the other monomer. These were later confirmed by applying the UNIFAC method (6). The saturation vapor pressures were calculated by Antoine coefficients (5).

It is impractical to provide solutions for all of the systems listed in the table on Page 474 we present as an example only the solution for the system l-propanol(l)/water(2). Solutions for the other systems can be obtained by rerunning the following Mathcad program with the appropriate parameter values substituted for those given. The file WILSON.mcd reproduces the table of Wilson parameters on Page 474 and includes the necessary Antoine coefficients.

Values for Antoine coefficients for the air-water system are given in Table 12-3. The standard values give vapor pressure within 0.1 percent of steam tables over the range 50 to 100°C, but an error of nearly 3 percent at 0°C. The alternative coefficients give a close fit at 0 and 100°C and an error of less than 1.2 percent over the intervening range.
