Anti-wear

It is noteworthy, however, that traces of sulfur can have beneficial effects on the anti-wear resistance of fuel injection pumps. It is thus undesirable to reduce the sulfur content to extremely low values unless additives having lubricating qualities are added. Independently from total sulfur content, the presence of mercaptans that are particularly aggressive towards certain metal or synthetic parts is strictly controlled. The mercaptan content is thereby limited to 0.002% (20 ppm) maximum. The analysis is performed chemically in accordance to the NF M 07-022 or ASTM D 3227 procedures. 

Anti-wear and extreme pressure additives phosphoric esters, dithiophosphates, sulfur-containing products such as fatty esters and sulfided terpenes or chlorinated products such as chlorinated paraffins. 

Calcium complex soap greases, obtained by the reaction of lime and a mixture of fatty acids and acetic acid. These greases offer good high temperature and anti-wear/extreme pressure properties related to the presence, in the soap, of calcium acetate that acts as solid lubricant they have good mechanical stability.

However, the most widely used materials are the zinc dialkyl-dithiophosphates that have an anti-wear effect in addition to their antioxidant power and, besides, offer an attractive cost/effectiveness ratio. 

The role of anti-wear and extreme-pressure additives is to create a solid lubricant at the interface of the metal by chemical reaction. 

Examples of dithiophosphoric derivatives used as anti-wear and extremel pressure additives. 

For example, olefin sulfuri2ation products (Lubrizol, 1980), dithiophosphomolybdates (Mobil, 1980), or more simply the dithiophosphates of alcohol (Shell, 1980) whose anti-oxidant properties have been announced, are used in oil formulations for their anti-wear properties. 

Water—Glycol Solutions. These materials are transparent solutions of water and glycol having good low temperature properties. They frequently contain water-soluble additives to improve performance in corrosion resistance, anti-wear, etc. A water-soluble polymer is commonly utilized to boost viscosity. As solutions their advantage over emulsions is their inherent stabdity. 

For long component life, the oil must contain the necessary additives to ensure high anti-wear characteristics. Not all hydraulic oils contain these additives. 

The increasing demands being made on equipment by the requirement for increased output from smaller units create problems of lubrication, even in systems where full-fluid film conditions generally exist. For instance, at start-up, after a period of rest, boundary lubrication conditions can exist and the mechanical wear that takes place could lead to equipment failure. SF Service typical of petrol engines in cars and some trucks from 1980. Oils developed for this service provide better oxidation stability and anti-wear performance than SE oils. They also provide protection against engine deposits, rust and corrosion. Oils meeting SF may be used wherever SE, SD or SC is recommended. 

Mineral oil alone, no matter how high its quality, cannot adequately carry out all the duties outlined above and hence the majority of hydraulic oils have their natural properties enhanced by the incorporation of four different types of additives. These are an anti-oxidant, an anti-wear... 

For a number of years HF-A oiTin-water emulsions have been used as a fire-resistant hydraulic medium for pit props. Concern over maintenance costs and operational life has created interest in a better anti-wear type fluid. Micro-emulsions are known to give better wear protection... 

Despite the introduction of new, improved methods of refining it has been necessary to enhance the performance of lubricants by the use of additives, either to reinforce existing qualities or to confer additional properties. Once additives were regarded with some suspicion —an oil that needed an additive was necessarily an inferior oil today they are an accepted feature of lubricants. Almost all quality lubricants on sale today contain one or more additives. An enormous range of additives are available for use in lubricants " , some produced by the oil companies and others provided by specialist manufacturers. Additives are usually named after their particular function, but many additives are multifunctional. Thus, an anti-wear additive may also protect a surface against corrosion. The main types of additives that can enhance the anti-corrosion behaviour of lubricants are listed in Table 2.22. 

The solvent action of mineral oil base stocks can cause skin problems and prolonged exposure may have been the origin of a few skin cancers . The use of additives that might be in any way harmful to health, e.g. ortho-tricresyl phosphate (anti-wear) and sodium mercaptobenzothiazole (anticorrosion) has been discontinued where skin contact is likely. 

RT-ILs are also selected as lubricant additives. Usage of ionic liquids as boundary lubricant additives for water has resulted in dramatically reduced running-in periods for silicon nitride materials [70]. When ILs were mixed into a neat mineral oil, the mixture has proven to produce lower wear on aluminum flat than either the oil or the ionic liquid alone [72], which indicates that a small amount of ILs in the mineral oil may function as an anti-wear additive. 

It can be concluded that the concentrations of the PFAM solution is an important factor for the PFAM film formed on the slider surface to affect the stiction and friction in the CSS tests. If the concentration is controlled around 500 ppm, an ideal surface topography, good hydrophobic nature, a preferred film thickness, and better frictional and anti-wear properties can be obtained.

Organophosphate esters are among the most widely used classes of synthetic compounds in hydraulic fluids. They are used as anti-wear additives in mineral oil hydraulic fluids and are significant components in certain fire-resistant hydraulic fluids (FMC 1991c, 1991d, 1992a, 1992b Wills 1980). 

The lack of corroborative case reports, epidemiological data, or animal data (see next paragraph) makes the association between dermal exposure to mineral oil hydraulic fluids and peripheral neuropathy uncertain. Nonetheless, the presence of organophosphate esters, some of which are demonstrated neurotoxic agents, in most mineral oil hydraulic fluids (they often are added as anti-wear agents) suggests that they may play a causative role if such an association exists. 

Reactive FFs can only be applied to a few specific cases for which they have been developed, such as the hydrocarbon systems discussed in the first part of this section. For other systems, describing tribochemical reactions requires the use of quantum chemical methods. In recent studies, such methods have been applied to investigate the behavior of zinc phosphates (ZPs) in response to high pressures. ZPs form the basis of anti-wear films derived from zinc dialkyldithiophosphates (ZDDPs), which are additives that have... 

One key experimental observation regarding the ZP films is that the films found on the tops of asperities are stiffer and exhibit chemical spectra indicative of longer phosphate chain lengths than films found in the valleys between asperities. These observations that differences in the conditions at the two distinct locations alter the elastic and chemical properties of the films. One of the key differences between the tops of asperities and the valleys is the pressure experienced by the zinc phosphates. Since the highest pressures, and greatest potential for wear, are achieved at the tops of the asperities, determining the response of ZPs to these pressures may aid in developing a clear picture of how the anti-wear films work. 

Overall, this work highlights how quantum chemical methods can be used to study tribochemical reactions within chemically complex lubricant systems. The results shed light on processes that are responsible for the conversion of loosely connected ZP molecules derived from anti-wear additives into stiff, highly connected anti-wear films, which is consistent with experiments. Additionally, the results explain why these films inhibit wear of hard surfaces, such as iron, yet do not protect soft surface such as aluminum. The simulations also explained a large number of other experimental observations pertaining to ZDDP anti-wear films and additives.103 Perhaps most importantly, the simulations demonstrate the importance of cross-linking within the films, which may aid in the development of new anti-wear additives.
