Anthraquinones biomimetic synthesis

Yamaguchi has reported a related biomimetic synthesis of anthraquinones, summarized in Scheme Reaction of diester (165) with methyl acetoacetate dianion provides a tetraketo diester which is cy-clized by calcium hydroxide to obtain anthrone (166).
