This correction may be avoided by using shoit (Anschutz) thermometers, in which the mercury thread is entirely immersed in the vapour. A rough correction for points above 100° may be made by detei mining the boiling points of pure organic substances, such as naphthalene, 2i6 6°, c. 

The submitters obtained 3.0 g. (78%) of product which melted at 99-100°. The melting point of 97-98° shown above was obtained by the checkers using a Tottoli melting point apparatus (Biichi) equipped with a 50° range Anschutz thermometer. A melting point of 98° has been reported ...

ANS or Antisonzinote. A castable expl AN 60, PETN 20, GuN 10 DCDA 10%, developed by M. Tonegutti and used during WW U by the Italian Navy for filling some ammunition. Its comparatively low mp(lQ4°) was due to the presence of GuN and DCDA. If one considers the amount of time usually spent in the preparation of a new compound, the few minutes required to obtain a good melting point seems little enough to make it inexcusable to report carelessly determined melting points. For this purpose, the use of the Hershberg apparatus and calibrated Anschutz thermometers is strongly recommended.
