One well-known factor to control the orientation of the 2-deoxyglycosidic bond is the (thermodynamic) anomeric effect, which is the preference for the axial electronegative substituent (the a-anomer for o-sugar in C conformation) at the Cl position because of the hyperconjugation between the lone-pair on C5 and the antibonding orbital (n —> 8 ) of the axial bond (Figme 38.2). [Pg.1137]
