Annex 2 Some Hints for Discussion Points

Below we offer some further hints on the Discussion Points to start you off. 

Discussion Point DPI hint You may wish to consider the conditions under which the reactions are conducted, and what one might do to facilitate a reaction at lower temperature, for example. 

Discussion Point DP2 hint Instead of water, what other solvent(s) could you suggest for the reaction  

Discussion Point DP3 hint A good way to begin considering a synthetic procedure is to carry out a retroanalysis, as exemplified in Chapter 5, Box 11. 

You could for example, analyse the structure of isobutyric acid into a series of smaller units and find ways of making and linking them.
