From a structural biology perspective, one of the most striking observations regarding protein evolution is the uncanny similarity of the 3D structure of proteins with common ancestry. This similarity across homologs is often quantified by an RMSD 1.5 A for the aligned backbone atoms of the proteins and holds even at low levels of sequence identity ( 30%) that are nevertheless sufficient to establish homology.
