Ammonia is a base and a nucleophile. It reacts with alkyl halides to give alkylamines, as shown below for methyl iodide [Pg.130]

Poly alkylation is common and difficult to prevent, and with an excess of methyl iodide, the final product is the tetramethylammonium cation. [Pg.130]
