It appears as though the oxidative coupling reaction of the amino group preferentially occurs in contrast to the oxidation of the azo-moiety to produce the corresponding azoxy compound. Oxidative Couplings of Heterocyclic Hydrazones. This method has opened the way to the preparation of azo derivatives of diazo compounds unobtainable by other means, ie, heterocycHc compounds ia which the diazotizable amino group is conjugated with the heterocycHc nitrogen atom as ia 2- and 4-amiQopyridine, compounds which do not normally yield stable diazonium salts (38). The presence of the aliphatic amino group complicates the course of the reaction. Thus, the oxidative coupling of 4-ethynyl-1,3-dimethyl-5-aminomethylpyrazole in mild conditions (20°C, CuCl, pyridine, O2) leads to only 20% of butadiyne. However, acylic protection eliminates these complications, and 4-ethynyl-1,3-dimethyl-5-(acetyl)aminomethylpyrazole forms a dehydrodimer in 95% yield (Scheme 66) (86TH1). [Pg.35]
