Allyl intermediate

Aryl or alkenyl halides attack the central carbon of the allene system in the 2,3-butadien-l-ol 120 to form the 7r-allyl intermediate 121, which undergoes elimination reaction to afford the o,/3-unsaturated ketone 122 or aldehyde. The reaction proceeds smoothly in DMSO using dppe as a ligandflOl]. 

If both ortho positions bear substituents other than hydrogen, the allyl group will further migrate to the para position. This reaction is called the para-Claisen rearrangement. The formation of the para-substituted phenol can be explained by an initial Claisen rearrangement to an ortho-2l y intermediate which cannot tautomerize to an aromatic o-allylphenol, followed by a Cope rearrangement to the p-allyl intermediate which can tautomerize to the p-allylphenol e.g. 6 ... 

Ammoxidation of propylene is considered under oxidation reactions because it is thought that a common allylic intermediate is formed in both the oxidation and ammoxidation of propylene to acrolein and to acrylonitrile, respectively. 

Much work has been invested to reveal the mechanism by which propylene is catalytically oxidized to acrolein over the heterogeneous catalyst surface. Isotope labeling experiments by Sachtler and DeBoer revealed the presence of an allylic intermediate in the oxidation of propylene to acrolein over bismuth molybdate. In these experiments, propylene was tagged once at Ci, another time at C2 and the third time at C3. 

A proposed mechanism for the oxidation of propylene to acrolein is by a first step abstraction of an allylic hydrogen from an adsorbed propylene by an oxygen anion from the catalytic lattice to form an allylic intermediate ... 

The hydrolytic DKR of allyl esters has been studied as a DKR of esters. The first DKR was accomplished through Pd-catalyzed racemization and enzymatic hydrolysis of allylic acetates in a buffer solution. However, the DKR under these conditions was limited to cyclohexenyl acetates to give symmetrical palladium-allyl intermediates. Among them, 2-phenyl-2-cyclohexenyl acetate 9 was the only substrate to have been resolved with good results (81% yield, 96% ee). 

Cp2Zr(H)(Cl) (8). The apparent record for catalyzed double bond movement is on 9-decene-l-ol to decanal (nine positions) using Fe3(CO)i2 (9). However, 30 mol % was required, which means that nearly a mole of metal was used per mole of alkenol. Herein we expand upon our initial report (10) of a very active catalyst (1) which has been shown to move a double bond over 30 positions. Catalyst 1 appears to have an intriguing and useful mode of action, in which the pendant base ligand performs proton transfer on coordinated alkene and Ti-allyl intermediates in a stereoselective fashion. 

The catalyst reported by Grotjahn and Lev (11-13) for alkyne hydration (2) is capable of isomerizing alkenes, but veiy slowly. Because we knew that the rate of alkyne hydration was unchanged in the presence of excess phosphine ligand, we thought that like alkyne hydration, alkene isomerization would require loss of acetonitrile ligand (14) and alkene binding. Subsequent deprotonation at an allylic position would make an q -allyl intermediate which when reprotonated at the other... 

The reactions are accelerated by bromide salts, which are thought to exchange for acetate in the ir-allylic complex. The reactions of acyclic compounds occur with minimal E Z isomerization. This result implies that the TT-allyl intermediate is captured by carbonylation faster than E Z isomerization occurs. 

Several pieces of mechanistic evidence implicate allylic radicals or cations as intermediates in these oxidations. Thus 14C in cyclohexene is distributed in the product cyclohexenone indicating that a symmetrical allylic intermediate is involved at some stage.159... 

With unsymmetrical dienes (74a and 74b) and unsymmetrical adducts, the problem of orientation of addition (cf. p. 184) arises. Initial attack will still be on a terminal carbon atom of the conjugated system so that a delocalised allylic intermediate is obtained, but preferential attack will be on the terminal carbon that will yield the more stable of the two possible cations i.e. (75) rather than (76), and (77) rather than (78) ...

The nickel catalyst under the condition for the 1 1 codimerization is not known to dimerize or polymerize ethylene, although a similar catalyst system has been known to dimerize propylene (26, 27) via a w-allyl intermediate. 

Hydrogenation of 1,3-dienes to terminal olefins is catalyzed by HRh(PPh3)4 and [Rh(CO)2(PPh3)2]2 in the presence of excess phosphine diene insertion into a metal- hydride bond to give a-alkenyl rather than 7r-allyl intermediates was postulated for the initial step (141). Palladium-catalyzed oxidation of 1,4-dienes has also been reported. Thus, Brown and Davidson28 obtained the 1,3-diacetate 25 from oxidation of 1,4-cyclohexadiene by ben-zoquinone in acetic acid with palladium acetate as the catalyst (Scheme 3). Presumably the reaction proceeds via acetoxypalladation-isomerization to give a rr-allyl intermediate, which subsequently undergoes nucleophilic attack by acetate. This principle, i.e. rearrangement of a (allyl)palladium complex, has been applied in nonoxidative palladium-catalyzed reactions of 1,4-dienes by Larock and coworkers29. Akermark and coworkers have demonstrated the stereochemistry of this process by the transformation of 1,4-cyclohexadiene to the ( r-allyl)palladium complex 26 by treatment... 

The mechanistic study revealed that the isomerization of allylic alcohols to the corresponding enols proceeds through a 7r-allyl intermediate (Scheme 21), and the isomerization of the enols to the corresponding carbonyl compounds proceeds through an oxy-7r-allyl intermediate (Scheme 22).45... 

Inspired by the well-established nickel-catalyzed co-oligomerization of 1,3-dienes with CO2, which proceeds via bis-TT-allyl intermediate, Mori has developed a powerful intramolecular version of this process (Scheme 103). After insertion of C02 into the bis-vr-allyl complex, a transmetallation with an organozinc reagent takes place to generate the Ni(0) catalyst. Highly functionalized carbo- and heterocyclic compounds with complete stereocontrol can372 be synthesized by this method. 

An allene moiety can serve as a nucleophile vis-a-vis a 7r-allylpalladium species generated from an allylic acetate moiety in substrates such as 495 (Scheme 124). The cyclization involving these two moieties generates another 7r-allyl intermediate, and the stage is set for the subsequent carbonylative cascade process as demonstrated by the transformation of 495 to 496.402... 

Malacria and co-workers76 were the first to report the transition metal-catalyzed intramolecular cycloisomerization of allenynes in 1996. The cobalt-mediated process was presumed to proceed via a 7r-allyl intermediate (111, Scheme 22) following C-H activation. Alkyne insertion and reductive elimination give cross-conjugated triene 112 cobalt-catalyzed olefin isomerization of the Alder-ene product is presumed to be the mechanism by which 113 is formed. While exploring the cobalt(i)-catalyzed synthesis of steroidal skeletons, Malacria and co-workers77 observed the formation of Alder-ene product 115 from cis-114 (Equation (74)) in contrast, trans-114 underwent [2 + 2 + 2]-cyclization under identical conditions to form 116 (Equation (75)).
