Alkynes, metal mediated trimerization

Many of the complexes discussed in the previous sections are catalysts for alkyne oligomerization. In fact, alkyne dimerization and trimerization (see Cyclodimerization -tri-merization Reactions) at a cobalt center is recognized as one of the most synthetically useful catalytic reactions mediated by a homogeneous transition metal complex. The cobalt complexes most useful and extensively studied are CpCoL2, where L is CO, alkene, diene, or phosphine. The complex types... [Pg.864]

Metallacycles have been claimed to play pivotal roles in many transition metal-mediated multi-component coupling reactions [1]. For example, [2 -i- 2 -i- 2] alkyne cyclo-trimerization leading to benzenes - the Reppe reaction - has been considered to proceed via metallacyclopentadiene and elusive metallacycloheptatriene intermediates ("common mechanism ), while metallacyclopentenes have been proposed as intermediates for the [2 -i- 2 -i- 1] cyclo-coupling reactions of an alkyne, an alkene, and CO leading to a cyclopentenone (the Pauson-Khand reaction). A metallacyclic compound - which is defined here as a carbocyclic system with one atom replaced by a transition metal element - can be generally formed by oxidative cyclization of two unsaturated molecules with a low-valent transition metal fragment [2-4]. Alter-... [Pg.95]

A number of other mechanistic sequences are thought to occur in alkyne trimerizations mediated by other metal systems. Catalysts derived from Co2(CO)s follow a characteristic sequence of steps that involves exclusively dinuclear complexes (Scheme 26). The nature of the final (alkyne)3C02(CO)4 intermediate, a so-called flyover complex, is supported by both X-ray crystal structure data as well as its involvement in forming other products besides benzenes. These dinuclear cobalt systems are note-... [Pg.1146]
