Alkenes, metal catalyzed hydration

Other cations (Cu2+, Pd2+, Ru3+, Ni2+, Rh3+) incorporated into Nafion-H have been found to promote hydration.36 Other metals that catalyze hydration of alkynes include gold(III),37 ruthenium(in),38 and platinum(II) (Zeise s salt39 40 and halides40), p-Methoxybenzenetellurinic acid is very effective in the hydration of terminal alkynes 41 Similar to the hydration of alkenes, photochemical acid-catalyzed hydration of alkynes is possible ... 

Mechanistic hypotheses play an important role in developing new catalytic and selective heterofunctionalizations of alkenes. Two basic reaction cycles for metal-catalyzed hydroalkoxylation (and hydration, for R = H) of alkenes can be postulated (Scheme 2). One pathway leads to Markovnikov products via activation of the nucleophile, oxy-metallation, and protonolysis (hydro-de-metallation) (Scheme 2a). Alternatively to the inner sphere syn-oxymetallation depicted in Scheme 2a, external anti-attack of the nucleophUe to coordinated olefin is plausible. The oxidation state of the metal remains constant in this cycle. The alternative hydrometallation pathway (Scheme 2b) proceeds via oxidative addition of the H-OR bond, hydrometallation of the olefin, and reductive elimination to the anti-Markovnikov addition product [3,4]. 

The nse of polysnlfide complexes in catalysis has been discnssed. Two major classes of reactions are apparent (1) hydrogen activation and (2) electron transfers. For example, [CpMo(S)(SH)]2 catalyzes the conversion of nitrobenzene to aniline at room temperature, while (CpMo(S))2S2CH2 catalyzes a number of reactions snch as the conversion of bromoethylbenzene to ethylbenzene and the rednction of acetyl chloride, as well as the rednction of alkynes to the corresponding cw-alkenes. Electron transfer reactions see Electron Transfer in Coordination Compounds) have been studied because of their relevance to biological processes (in, for example, ferrodoxins), and these cluster compounds are dealt with in Iron-Sulfur Proteins. Other studies include the use of metal polysulfide complexes as catalysts for the photolytic reduction of water by THF and copper compounds for the hydration of acetylene to acetaldehyde. ...
