Alkaline metal oxide

The electron-rich oxygen anions exhibit basic electron donor capacity. Basic metal oxides are commonly used for neutralizing or scrubbing acidic gases. Alkaline earth metal oxides have been used for the removal of NOx. The surfaces of cubic alkaline metal oxide such as MgO, CaO, and BaO are dominated by the Lewis basicity of surface oxide anions. The basicity increases down the alkaline earth family as the metal ion radii become larger and the chaige on the metal ion becomes more positive. 

Analogous to the formation of ternary oxosilicates by reaction of an alkaline metal oxide with an acidic nonmetal oxide the synthesis of a ternary phosphorus nitride is possible (Scheme 1).

Possibly the combination of silica gel with alkaline metal oxides induces a large increase in the surface area and, moreover, a generation of new acidic sites which may also serve to promote the reaction. 

Alkali and alkaline-earth exchanged zeolites or zeotypes (c.g. MCM-41) [15, 39, 130, 141-155] have been extensively used as base catalysts. However, they are w eak bases. Alternatively, either alkali metal or alkali and alkaline-metal oxides can be occluded into zeolites and zeotypes in order to increase their basicity [18,63, 154, 156-161]. This is usually referred to as the introduction of a basic guest into a zeolite host. Moreover, the loading of Yterbium or Europium metal on zeolites, thus yielding strong bases, has been reported [17].
