Undiluted halogen compounds of the aliphatic series, such as ethyl bromide, chloroform, bromoform, and the like, should not be brought into contact with metallic sodium or potassium thus they must not be dried with these metals since very violent explosions may occur as a result of detonation (Staudinger).

For one-carbon halogenated aliphatics, HOMO decreases as the number of chlorines increases. HOMO is a measure of the ability of a compound to donate electrons (i.e., to act as a nucleophile or undergo oxidation) therefore, an increase in chlorine numbers increases the reactivity of the molecule. The dataset is chloromethane, dichloromethane, chloroform, and carbon tetrachloride. HOMO represents 99.90% of the variance in the linear regression equation. The probability of getting a correlation of -0.9995 for a sample size of four is less than 2%. 

Here, R is an aliphatic or aromatic residue and X is an alkyl, hydroxyl, alkoxy, aroxy, ester, nitrile, or halogen group. This synthesis can indeed be carried out in the melt, but is mostly performed in a slurry with chloroform,. sym-tetrachloroethane, or m-cresol/xylene with excess of dicarbonyl compound.
