A combined enzymatic/chemical synthesis of imino-alditols used fructose 1,6-diphosphate aldolase to generate 6-azido-ketohexoses (as outlined in Scheme 4) which could be catalytically reduced to deoxynojirimycin and deoxymannojirimycin.
