Both sodium acetylide in xylene (Air Reduction Corporation) and lithium acetylide-ethylenediamine complex (Foote Mineral Co.) are now commercially available, and have been used successfully for the ethynylation of 17-keto steroids. 

Water that was deaerated by boiling was used, and an atmosphere of nitrogen essentially free from oxygen (such as the Seaford grade of the Air Reduction Company) was maintained, in order to prevent discoloration of the alkaline solution of catechol due to oxidation.

One successful technique involves the substitution of Ce4+ by a more readily reduced cation such as Pr4+ to form the oxide Cej vPrr02- The Pr4+ ion is not as stable as the Ce4+ ion, and the oxide Ce1 cPrx02 is reduced when the oxygen partial pressure falls below that in air. Reduction affects the Pr4+ ions almost exclusively, with the generation of oxygen vacancies and electrons ...
