Affecting the Tellurium Atom

Tellurophene and substituted tellurophenes react with bromine to give Te,Te-dibromides, as do dialkyl and diaryl telluriums. Tetrachlorotellurophene and chlorine combined to produce tetrachlorotellurophene Te.Te-dichloride in quantitative yield . The corresponding reactions with iodine have not been investigated. The dibromides are reduced to tellurophenes by aqueous sodium hydrogen sulfite or zinc powder in glacial acetic acid.  

Tetraphenyltellurophene did not react with methyl iodide to give a telluronium iodide. Whether or not other tellurophenes react with methyl iodide or other alkyl halides has not been explored.
