Adhesive warm-setting

The warm-melt properties must be balanced very thoroughly. If the adhesive is setting too fast, it does not wet the surface enough and there will be disbonding under torsion stress. To increase the slow curing speed in cold and dry atmospheres, two component systems are available, which are either real 2C systems or with water paste accelerated 1C adhesives. These are used when the bonded structure has to bear load in a very early stage. 

Supramolecular polymers are a growth area. Self-healing materials, which have only to be warmed to seal a crack, or even just squeezed, have already been made. Adhesives with special properties are another application, and also printer inks, which flow in the hot pen and set solid on the paper. There is plenty of further scope for the imagination. 

Calendering of Thiokol FA compounds is best accomplished with the top roll at 42°C and the middle one at 39 C, and the maximum thickness set at 0.08 cm. The feedstock should be well warmed, fed in small strips, and a small rolling bank be maintained. If the compound is to be plied up to obtain a greater thickness, then the compound will need to have tackifiers included for satisfactory ply adhesion.
