Acyl anions, masked syntheses with

Acylation is one of the most fundamental and useful reactions in organic synthesis and is normally achieved by the reaction either with carboxylic acid derivatives and organometallic compounds or with masked acyl anions and aUcyl halides. 

Synthesis of the acyclic portion began, as in the previous synthesis, with enantiomerically pure citronellol (25). Protection of the alcohol as the benzyl ether and oxidative cleavage of the olefin to the aldehyde gave 26 (85%). Chain extension via the masked acyl anion equivalent 27, alcohol protection, and concomitant -elimination and isomerization of the allene to die alkyne with butyl lithium gave 28. The resulting protected ketone must now be converted to the P-alcohol required for the completion of the synthesis. While this section describes the application of dithiacyclohexane anions as masked acyl anions to the preparation of a-hydroxyketones only, it is readily apparent that their alkylation with other electrophilic reagents allows for a general ketone synthesis (see Worked Example 23-26). 

Synthesis of trifluoromethylated compounds 152 has been achieved via ester-enolate [2,3]-Wittig and [3,3]-lreland-Claisen rearrangements. Perfluorocyclo-butane phosphonium ylides, e.g. 153, have been used as a masked fluoride anion source in their reactions with alcohols and carboxylic acids which lead to alkyl-and acyl-fluorides. Ylides 153 are also reported to cleave Si-C and Si-O bonds, cause dimerisation of fluoro-olefins, and also react with acid chlorides or other activated aromatic compounds under halogen exchange. ...
