The presence of acidic groups on the carbon surface (postulated as carboxyls and lactones) and their ionization in water changes the pH of the carbon suspension. The pH of as-received ACF-307 and GAC-E samples were 7 and 10 respectively. The pH of these carbons was reduced to between 3 and 4 on oxidation with nitric [Pg.348]
