Actinide magnetism

A short exposition of the basic concepts of actinide magnetic research and of the different aspects of magnetic ordering in actinide solids is followed by a discussion of experimental and interpretational aspects, in particular the difficulty always encountered of separating the different contributions. 

One of the aims of the chapter is to inspire new research in actinide magnetism. To this purpose, tables collecting the main magnetic data for a large number of actinide binary compounds are provided.

For one-sublattice magnets, such as Fe and Co, the Akulov or Callen and Callen theory [81] relates the temperature dependence of the anisotropy to the spontaneous magnetization and yields hi and Af° power laws for uniaxial and cubic magnets, respectively. This theory has become popular far beyond its range of applicability [82] but is unable to describe structures such as rare-earth transition-metal magnets [16, 60], actinide magnets [83], and L10 type compounds [44, 84]. 

AnPt3 compounds were prepared for all stable light actinides. Magnetic properties of ThPt3 and PaPt3 are unknown.

Rare-earth and actinide magnetism studies call for low temperatures. The solution then is a gas pressure cell. Such a system using compressed He gas as the pressure transmitting medium has been developed by Butz et al. (1986). It is now stationed at PSI with some modifications (Kratzer et al. l994a).
