Chemical studies on the leaf constituents of Acnistus arborescens [200], Withania somnifera [201-204], W. coagulens [205], and Jaborosa integrifoUa [206-208] have resulted in the discoveiy of the withanolides and jaboro-solides. One member of this group of steroidal lactones, withaferin A (L), has been found to be active against the experimental neoplasms W 256 and S 180. However, the therapeutic index of this compound is too small to warrant further pharmacological study [209]. [Pg.30]
