Absorption Laws

When light of intensity Iph(O) enters a liquid which contains absorbing centers, the intensity is reduced. Tlie decrease of light intensity over a distance x is given by

The diffusion coefficients of cations in metal oxides are usually measured through the use of radioactive isotopes. The first method [87,88] uses a matrix form of the Beer-Lambert absorption law in a transmission mode. A 2-D material sample is raster-scanned by a pulsed, tunable THz source to generate an N rows x L columns image matrix [/] where N is the number of THz frequencies used and L is the number of pixels. The values of [/] are the measured total absorbance at each pixel. Separate absorption experiments with known materials of interest establish the THz spectra both graphically and through the N x M spectra matrix [S], where M is the number of components. The collection of species can include non-agent materials that can affect the absorptions for example, barrier materials with spectra that are typically weakly frequency dependent. The spatial patterns of the agents are contained in the M x L matrix [P], The values of [P] effectively contain agent concentration information.

In this case the probability of the passage of an atom through a layer of matter becomes greater than the one that follows from the usual exponential dependence. This phenomenon, superpenetration of ultrarelativistic A.2e, allows for measurement of the time of conversion of a non-stationary state of e+e, formed in the target, to stationary states and to verify the form of the Lorentz transformations for the time [8]. The theory of superpenetration has been formulated in [9,10,11]. Every molecular species is capable of absorbing its own characteristic frequencies of electromagnetic radiation, as described in Figure 24-5. This process transfers energy to the molecule and results in a decrease in the intensity of the incident electromagnetic radiation. Absorption of the radiation thus attenuates the beam in accordance with the absorption law described later. 

The concentration of certain components in a multi-component sample can be determined by quantitative analysis of its vibrational spectrum. Similar to quantitative analysis of X-ray diffraction spectra, the concentration of a component can be evaluated from the intensities of its vibration bands. For an IR spectmm, concentration is proportional to absorbance (A) according to the absorption law, also called Beer s Law. 

The value of nt used in Eq. (9-10) must be obtained by direct measurement, since it is not sufficiently accurate to use a tabulated value of n together with the measured thickness t of the specimen. To determine fit we use a strong diffracted beam from any convenient material and measure its intensity when the sheet specimen is inserted in the diffracted beam and again when it is not. The value of Ht is then obtained from the absorption law, I, = /oC" ", where /q and I, are the intensities incident on and transmitted by the sheet specimen, respectively.

Using results established in previous sections., it can however be shown that this assertion represents only an approximation to the truth. Absorption from a white light or other broadband source in fact allows photon pairs of differing frequencies to be concertedly absorbed by molecules in close proximity (Andrews 1988). In this section, it is shown that this may result in a change to the appearance of absorption spectra, and yield an absorption law that departs from normal Beer-Lambert behavior. One particular case in which such effects may be expected to arise is where supercontinuum laser radiation is employed for spectroscopic purposes.
