Absorbed hydrated atomic

Concurrent with requirements for low levels of mercurials in discharge water is the problem of their deterrnination. The older methods of wet chemistry are inadequate, and total rehance is placed on instmmental methods. The most popular is atomic absorption spectrophotometry, which rehes on the absorption of light by mercury vapor (4). Solutions of mercury compounds not stabilized with an excess of acid tend to hydrolyze to form yeUow-to-orange basic hydrates. These frequendy absorb onto the walls of containers and may interfere with analytical results when low levels (ppm) of mercury are determined. [Pg.112]

The protein that stores iron in the body is called ferritin. A ferritin molecule consists of a protein coat and an iron-containing core. The outer coat is made up of 24 pol3q5eptide chains, each with about 175 amino acids. As Figure 20-27 shows, the pol q5eptides pack together to form a sphere. The sphere is hollow, and channels through the protein coat allow movement of iron in and out of the molecule. The core of the protein contains hydrated iron(HI) oxide, FC2 O3 H2 O. The protein retains its shape whether or not iron is stored on the inside. When filled to capacity, one ferritin molecule holds as many as 4500 iron atoms, but the core is only partially filled under normal conditions. In this way, the protein has the capacity to provide iron as needed for hemoglobin s mthesis or to store iron if an excess is absorbed by the body. [Pg.1483]

The blue color of these "type 1" copper proteins is much more intense than are the well known colors of the hydrated ion Cu(H20)42+ or of the more strongly absorbing Cu(NH3)42+. The blue color of these simple complexes arises from a transition of an electron from one d orbital to another within the copper atom. The absorption is somewhat more intense in copper peptide chelates of the type shown in Eq. 6-85. However, the -600 nm absorption bands of the blue proteins are an order of magnitude more intense, as is illustrated by the absorption spectrum of azurin (Fig. 23-8). The intense blue is thought to arise as a result of transfer of electronic charge from the cysteine thiolate to the Cu2+ ion.520 521... [Pg.883]

Coupling pulse radiolysis with time-resolved spectroscopy also allowed the determination of the transient absorption spectra of hydrated silver atom and of the first silver clusters showing that the absorption properties of silver atoms and metal aggregates in solution are different from that of bare clusters in gas phase. Silver atom presents an absorption maximum at 360 nm in water, while it absorbs at substantially shorter wavelengths in argon (292-310 nm) or in xenon (322-333 nm) atmosphere. ... [Pg.352]

When polymer solution is irradiated, water chiefly absorbs the energy of the radiation, and water decomposition, which is hydrated electron, OH radical, and hydrogen atom, proton, etc, are generated in the solution[reaction (2)]. These radicals having a high reactivity cause various chemical reactions in the solution. [Pg.170]
