For such a big molecule, porphyrins are surprisingly easy to make. Some labs made porphyrins in water from simple combinations like methane, ammonia, and a spark. Porphyrins have been found in meteorites and petroleum deposits, and there is even a porphyrin mineral. Abelsonite, a special kind of orange-purplish semi-transparent rock found only in Colorado and Utah, is composed entirely of nickel porphyrins. [Pg.127]
