Abbreviations for Indicating Assumptions

In the next four sections, when we start doing detailed developments, the above assumptions - and some additional ones - will be introduced at various points. In order to keep track of the restrictions placed on various results, we include a set of letters just before many equations. These letters will indicate the assumptions that apply to the equation in question. The symbols used are as follows  

F scalar friction coefficient used to describe the hydrodynamic force (no hydrodynamic interaction) - Eq. (12.6) 

C concentration gradient constant over molecular dimensions temperature gradient constant over molecular dimensions V velocity gradient constant over molecular dimensions 

D dumbbell (Hookean spring, both bead masses and friction coefQcients the same, no hydrodynamic interaction) 

M all bead masses identical within one molecule all bead fnction
