A Vilsmeier-Induced Annulation to Benzene

Treatment of 5-allyl-l,2,3-trimethoxybenzene with a mixture of iV-methylformanilide and phosphorus oxychloride gave the dihydronaphthalene derivative 1 in 58% yield.
