A look ahead

In Chapter 12 we will discuss, in more detail, some of the technology associated with reducing air pollution from internal combustion engines. 

You will also see that some pollutants (sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides) have a major impact on our environment as primary contributors to acid rainfall. You will need some knowledge of water chemistry and of the pH scale to fully appreciate this problem, so we will defer that discussion until Chapter 11. 

Lastly, some chemicals known as chlorofluorocarbons (GFGs) are pollutants of major concern in an entirely different region of our atmosphere. These chemicals, whose effect at tropospheric levels is minimal, play havoc with the protective ozone layer of our stratosphere. 

Air pollution can take many forms, come from many sources, have its impact in different regions of our atmosphere, and require different forms of personal, legislative, and technological action to control. You will decide what contribution, if any, you as an individual can make to these efforts. Alternatively, you may decide that no action is required. Only by being informed will you be able to make these decisions.
