A Linear Dimetallic Platinum Complex

The complex traMS-Pt[Mo(CO)3(f/5-C5H5)]2(PhCN)2 is light sensitive. It can be stored in the dark under N2 at — 20 °C for months and is sufficiently stable toward oxygen that it can be rapidly weighted in air. The same is true for its Cr or W homologs.3 All three complexes truns-Pt[M(CO)3)( /5-CjH5)]2(PhCN)2 have a limited solubility in THF and dichloromethane but 

These complexes are convenient precursors for the high-yield synthesis of tetranuclear clusters, detailed in the following section for the Pt2Mo2 and the Pd2Mo2 derivatives.

The method of choice is given here for the preparation of these mixed-metal cluster complexes and it can be extended to other phosphine ligands.3,4 A second route to these complexes starting with M C12(PR3)2 and Na[Mo(CO)3(f/5-C5H5)] 2DME is also known,3,4 but it is often of lesser value giving generally lower yields
