A-Cyano-4-nitrostilbene

The addition of substituted benzylamines to a-cyano-4-nitrostilbene (125) has been found to involve the formation of the zwitterionic species (126) in an equilibrium, and its subsequent decomposition to (127) catalysed by a second molecule of the amine.
