The use of larger particles in the cyclotron, for example carbon, nitrogen or oxygen ions, enabled elements of several units of atomic number beyond uranium to be synthesised. Einsteinium and fermium were obtained by this method and separated by ion-exchange. and indeed first identified by the appearance of their concentration peaks on the elution graph at the places expected for atomic numbers 99 and 100. The concentrations available when this was done were measured not in gcm but in atoms cm. The same elements became available in greater quantity when the first hydrogen bomb was exploded, when they were found in the fission products. Element 101, mendelevium, was made by a-particle bombardment of einsteinium, and nobelium (102) by fusion of curium and the carbon-13 isotope.  [c.443]

Following tradition giving the right to name an element to the discoverer(s), the Berkeley group in 1967, suggested that the hastily given name nobelium along with the symbol No, be retained.  [c.163]

Lawrencium behaves differently from dipositive nobelium and more like the tripositive elements earlier in the actinide series.  [c.215]

Ethylene and tetrafluoroethylene are copolymerized in aqueous, nonaqueous, or mixed medium with free-radical initiators. The polymer is isolated and converted into extmded cubes, powders, and beads, or a dispersion. This family of products is manufactured by Du Pont, Hoechst, Daikin, Asahi Glass, and Ausimont and sold under the trade names of Tefzel, Hostaflon ET, Neoflon EP, Aflon COP, and Halon ET, respectively.  [c.365]

NPH Isophane Human Insulin Suspension. NPH isophane insulin, also called Humulin N, Insulatard NPH Human, or Novolin N is an intermediate-acting form of human insulin produced by recombinant DNA techniques. Mixtures Humulin 70/30 and Novolin 70/30 contain 70% NPH isophane and 30% regular, whereas Humulin 50/50 contains 50% NPH isophane and 50% regular. It is adrninistered subcutaneously and should not be given intravenously. Absorption is delayed because the insulin is conjugated with protamine in a complex of reduced isoelectric solubiUty. Therapeutically, this preparation is probably comparable to purified porcine NPH insulin. However, human NPH insulin may have a slightly shorter duration of action than comparable purified porcine products.  [c.340]

Gas-phase polymerization of propylene was pioneered by BASF, who developed the Novolen process which uses stirred-bed reactors (Fig. 8) (125). Unreacted monomer is condensed and recycled to the polymerizer, providing additional removal of the heat of reaction. As in the early Hquid-phase systems, post-reactor treatment of the polymer is required to remove catalyst residues (126). The high content of atactic polymer in the final product limits its usefiilness in many markets.  [c.414]

The lower solubiHty metal and alkaline-earth metal soaps are also widely used in a variety of different appHcations. For example, calcium oleate is utilized in the waterproofing of cement. Metal soaps, such as calcium, magnesium, and aluminum soaps, are commonly used for the thickening of hydrocarbon lubricating greases, mold release, and suspending agents in paints (see Driers and metallic soaps) (33). Magnesium stearate [557-04-0] is frequendy used as a filler material and binder in dmg tablets and as either inert binder or emulsification agent in cleansing products and cosmetics, respectively (34). Aluminum soap has been used in the manufacture of weapons of war, applying its emulsification properties to napalm. Zinc soaps have been studied and appHed to specialty cleansing products because of their antibacterial and antifungal properties.  [c.159]

Element 106 was created by the reaction 249Gf(180,4N)263X, which decayed by alpha emission to rutherfordium, and then by alpha emission to nobelium, which in turn further decayed by alpha between daughter and granddaughter. The element so identified had alpha energies of 9.06 and 9.25 MeV with a half-life of 0.9 +/- 0.2 s.  [c.162]

In 1957 workers in the United States, Britain, and Sweden announced the discovery of an isotope of element 102 with a 10-minute half-life at 8.5 MeV, as a result of bombarding 244Gm with 13G nuclei. On the basis of this experiment, the name nobelium was assigned and accepted by the Gommission on Atomic Weights of the International Union of Pure and Applied Ghemistry.  [c.163]

Sixteen isotopes of fermium are known to exist. 257Fm, with a half-life of about 100.5 days, is the longest lived. 250Fm, with a half-life of 30 minutes, has been shown to be a decay product of element 254-102. Chemical identification of 250Fm confirmed the production of element 102 (nobelium).  [c.212]

A second form of desolvation chamber relies on diffusion of small vapor molecules through pores in a Teflon membrane in preference to the much larger droplets (molecular agglomerations), which are held back. These devices have proved popular with thermospray and ultrasonic nebulizers, both of which produce large quantities of solvent and droplets in a short space of time. Bundles of heated hollow polyimide or Naflon fibers have been introduced as short, high-surface-area membranes for efficient desolvation.  [c.108]

Kegu/ar Human Insulin Injection. Known as Humulin R, Novolin R, or Velosulin Human, this rapid-acting form of human insulin [11061-68-0] is produced by recombinant DNA techniques (biosynthetic) or enzymatic conversion (semisynthetic) of porcine insulin. It may be adrninistered subcutaneously, intravenously, intramuscularly, or through an infusion pump. Therapeutically, this preparation is probably equivalent to purified porcine insulin injection. Human regular insulins are absorbed faster than the corresponding purified porcine product in some patients. Although the peak semm concentration of human insulin injection after subcutaneous adrninistration is slightly higher than that of purified porcine insulin injection, the times to peak concentration and overall bioavailabiUty are similar and control of blood glucose appears to be equivalent. No differences are apparent in binding, actions, metaboHsm, or potency.  [c.340]

The Unipol PP process (Union Carbide), extends technology originally developed for ethylene polymerization to propylene polymerization utilizing Shell (SHAC) catalysts. One large gas-phase fluidized-bed reactor is used for the production of homopolymer and random copolymer a second, smaller reactor is used to produce the mbber required for impact copolymers. The heat of reaction is removed by cooling the monomer recycle through an external heat exchanger (Fig. 12). The Novolen process (BASF), has been rejuvenated through the use of high yield catalyst technology. Problems associated with low polymer productivity, high levels of atactic polymer, and catalyst residues have been alleviated by the use of these catalysts. Amoco s horizontal stirred-bed gas-phase reactor is the heart of the Amoco /Chisso process. This reactor (Fig. 13) acts as a series of polymerization stages in a single reactor vessel, facihtating the production of broad molecular weight distribution homopolymers and random copolymers. Impact copolymers are produced in a second similar reactor in series as in other processes (135). MonteU produces specialty propylene copolymers in the multistage gas-phase CataHoy process (136).  [c.416]
