Considering the advantages. Silk [7], Chapman [8], Huebschen [9] and others carried out experimental studies to establish the potential of SH waves. Huebschen carried out time-of-flight measurements in steel plates using EMAT generated SH waves to find the depth of surface breaking defects. Two separate transmit and receive EMATs were used in pitch-catch mode at a grazing angle of 90 deg. The EMATs, separated by 96 mm, were symmetrically positioned on the defect side and the depth of the defect was calculated from the measured change in transit time with the presence of a defect. The present study continues these investigations concerning the feasibility of using diffracted SH waves for defect sizing. Phased array EMATs with 8 segments and associated instrumentation (developed at Fraunhofer Institute for NOT (IzfP), Saarbruecken, Germany) have been used for the present study. Optimisation of test parameters and application of signal processing methods for reliable detection and characterisation of fatigue cracks and machined notches are presented in the paper.  [c.722]
